When you are new, the temptation is to haul in everything you own. The trick is not having all the gear, it is having the right gear. The 10 Essentials, created by The Mountaineers, has guided safe outdoor travel for decades. It is not about brand names, it is about categories that keep you alive when things go sideways. Carry all ten on every trip, big or small.
Stay found and lit
- Navigation: map, compass, GPS or app
- Headlamp or flashlight with spare batteries
- Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
Fix and fuel
- First aid kit
- Knife or multi-tool
- Fire starter: lighter, matches, ferro rod
- Extra food, more than you think
Warm and dry
- Shelter: tent, tarp, or emergency blanket
- Extra water and purification
- Extra clothes, layered for weather
Around that safety net, build three simple systems for the night: a shelter system (a 2-person backpacking tent is the easiest first choice), a sleep system (bag rated 20 to 40 degrees, plus an insulating pad), and a layered clothing system of a synthetic or merino base, a fleece or puffy mid-layer, and a waterproof shell. No cotton. Every item should earn its spot in the pack.
